10 Ways To Keep Healthy Teeth And Gums

1. Brush Twice a Day.

You know that you must brush your teeth twice a day, but you need to spend at least two minutes on this activity to ensure its effectiveness. The easiest way to accomplish this is to keep a timer in the bathroom. Another fun thing you can do is hum a two-minute song while you brush.

2. Buy a New Toothbrush Every Two to Three Months.

Brushing your teeth will be less effective if you do not replace your manual toothbrush or the head of your electric toothbrush every two to three months. If you fail to do this, the bacteria that have accumulated on your toothbrush’s bristles will be transferred to your mouth again.

3. Brush Gently.

Remember that it isn’t necessary to use all of your strength to brush your teeth. Honestly, this doesn’t work. The best method is to hold the brush at a 45-degree angle against your gums. Then, move the brush in circles rather than back and forth. This method is guaranteed to help you remove more plaque.

4. Reduce Your Sugar Intake.

It’s not a secret that sugar has negative effects on your teeth, but it is worth mentioning here. After sugar and the bacteria in your mouth meet, they create plaque. Plaque causes your teeth to decay and also can cause your gums to bleed. In addition, sugar contains acid, and this substance is known to erode the tooth’s enamel.

5. Eat Fewer Starchy Foods.

Sugars are not the only problem foods that can cause decay. Other dangerous foods include the following:

  • Gum
  • Dried fruits
  • Crackers
  • Potato chips
  • Breadsticks

The above-listed products provoke issues because they are starchy and can easily stick to your teeth. This presents a problem because people do not always brush their teeth after they consume these foods, so leftover particles have plenty of time to create acids that can produce enamel damage.

6. Eat the Right Foods.

Now that you know what not to eat, you must learn which foods will help to promote healthy gums and teeth. Foods that contain large amounts of calcium are excellent choices, and they include cheese, yogurt and milk. Calcium is important because it is the element that keeps your jawbones healthy so that your teeth can remain in place.

7. Use an Alcohol-Free Mouthwash.

You can increase the amount of bacteria you remove by rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash after meals in between the times that you brush and floss. The best choice is a mouthwash that does not contain alcohol because this substance has been proven to cause dry mouth. Without sufficient saliva, the teeth are more susceptible to decay. You can also neutralize acid and remove plaque by chewing a sugar-free gum that will increase the amount of saliva in your mouth.

8. Floss Once a Day.

Brushing cannot adequately remove plaque that exists between your teeth, so it is important for you to floss at least once a day. People who do not do this discover they have tartar between their teeth that can only be removed in the dentist’s chair. When you floss, be careful not tug against your gums so hard that you inadvertently injure your gums and cause bleeding. Remember to floss behind your back teeth as well.

9. Refrain from Smoking.

Scientists have discovered that the use of tobacco products increases the risk of oral cancer and gum disease. This is true whether you smoke cigarettes or chew tobacco. Along with increasing serious health risks, smoking also stains your teeth. Therefore, if you smoke, quit. If you do not, don’t start.

10. Visit a Dentist Every Six Months.

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums also requires that you visit your dentist at least twice a year. During these appointments, your dental hygienist will professionally clean your teeth because brushing, flossing and rinsing cannot remove every ounce of damaging plaque that exists. Furthermore, your dentist may be able to apply a sealant to the surfaces of your molars that will also help prevent tooth decay.
